Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's early attempts to success in mainstream music failed, two distinct record labels signing the singer and then pulling her out before they released any songs. Capitol Records however released Perry's EP Ur So Gay in 2007. The title track was a jolly and playful track that garnered a little public attention. I kissed a Girl, a confident tribute to her sexual inclinations set against a hard-edged electronic-pop beat, made a bigger sensation later. It quickly sparked controversy, as critics criticized it for promoting same-sex relations while others claimed that the sexually explicit scene the song depicted sparked male fantasies of female sexuality. I Kissed a Girl became the number one hit in the world due to the combination of excitement and an elegant melodic tune. It also helped drive sales for her album from 2008 of the same name, the album One of the Boys. With its bouncy sharp-tongued second song Hot N Cold also proving an enormous hit, the album which Perry wrote herself eventually registered sales of more than 3 million copies across the United States.
